The women foresters came from all walks of life.Fisher girls from Ross-shire
exchanged a life with the sea for a life in the woods; near Kilmarnock one
observer interviewed shop assistants, a ‘shoe operative’, a lithographer and
a children’s nurse, now all engaged in forestry work. Measurers were often
ex-school teachers and clerks. Ursula Wood, an artist, closed down her
business during the war and joined the Forestry Service at the age of 50.
